While serving as sous chef at Hugh Acheson’s 5&10 in Athens, GA, Dean assisted Hugh with his first cookbook A New Turn in the South and in his opening of Empire State South in Atlanta. Hugh promoted Dean to executive chef of 5&10 in 2011.Dean helped John Fleer open the highly acclaimed Rhubarb in Asheville, NC, and then reconnected with a 5&10 regular, Jeff Duckworth. Together, they opened PinPoint Restaurant in 2015. Jeff runs the front of the house, while Lydia Clopton, Dean’s fiancee who is another 5&10 alum, serves as pastry chef. Dean’s farm-to-table approach to fine dining attracts a growing number of customers and brings a sophisticated appreciation for seasonality and creativity with local foods.
